Small store, big influence.
A Legacy Begins
In 1960 Nelson Knode, Emory Knode’s father, established Nelson Knode’s Music Center on Frederick Road in Catonsville, Maryland. It originally focused on supplying orchestral instruments for big bands and schools. But as the first music store in Baltimore County, it quickly became an epicenter of musical activity. Then in the late 1970s the music business changed, and “America’s music” — BLUEGRASS — was hot! So in the fall of 1980, Emory Knode changed the name and the focus of the store — it was the birth of the Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe: Everything for the Bluegrass Musician!
Acoustic Music Lives
Offering acoustic instruments like guitars, banjos, mandolins, dobros and fiddles, lessons with great bluegrass instructors, and a repair department with an experienced luthier, Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe became a respected leader of a musical trend that continues on to this day.
Adding a book department with instruction and songbooks and a regular Tuesday night open jam sessions lasted for over 27 years, Appalachian Bluegrass Shoppe was poised at the forefront of acoustic music trends that saw new generations of musicians picking up where traditional bluegrass pickers left off.
Since then the Appalachian Bluegrass has seen the old rocker’s going “unplugged” in the ’90s, the popularity of country music in the new millennium, and the resurgence of “string bands” and folk music in the decade to follow — coupled with the building popularity of new guitar manufactures like Taylor Guitars — creating an unending desire for acoustic instruments in traditional and modern players alike.
Today, Emory & Charlene Knode, along with their dedicated professional staff, work hard everyday to make sure Appalachian Bluegrass remains a full service acoustic music resource for modern and traditional players.
