In this introduction to the Old-Time Clawhammer banjo style, the class will examine and practice the fundamentals of this very accessible, very fun, and increasingly popular style of banjo playing. No banjo playing experience is necessary; true beginners are welcome. Upon completion of the course, students will have a handful of tunes under their belt and an understanding of the basic techniques and skills needed to play Clawhammer banjo. Whether helping you experiences the rich and vibrant heritage of Appalachian string band music, accompanying you in a song, or just giving voice to a tune in your heart, the banjo will be your lifelong friend! Please bring a recording device.
Instructor bio: Rooted in the traditions of Old-Time American folk music, Baltimore-based banjo wizard Brad Kolodner represents the next generation of Old-Time musicians pushing the boundaries of the tradition into uncharted territory. Regarded for his delicate touch, expressive style, and original compositions, Kolodner has rapidly gained national attention for his unique approach to the banjo at just 24 years of age as the winner or finalist in numerous national contests. Old-Time Clawhammer banjo is experiencing a rebirth in American folk music and Kolodner is helping to lead the charge as a performer, teacher, Strathmore Artist in Resident, radio DJ for WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, jam leader, community builder and ambassador for Old-Time folk music.
